Andrew Lake obtained a degree in Civil Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia in 1997, and a Master of Science in Pavement Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1999. He started his career in quality control; employed with John Emery Geotechnical Engineering Limited and the Graniterock Company in California. Andrew returned to his roots in Nova Scotia in 2001, where he remains employed as an estimator/project manager with Will-Kare Paving & Contracting Ltd. He is active in many industry associations, presently serving as chair of the Nova Scotia Asphalt User Producer Association, member of the board of the Nova Scotia Road Builders Association, and a member in good standing with the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia.

Phil Sullivan is a native of Dartmouth, NS and has resided in the greater Halifax area for his whole life. Following completion of his bachelor of engineering at Dalhousie University in 2002, Phil joined AMEC Earth & Environmental. Initially he worked in the hot mix asphalt laboratory learning the relationships between asphalt mix properties and the principles of hot mix designs. Following his first season Phil continued to dedicate a large portion of his time to expanding his interest in materials engineering with an emphasis on asphalt technology. Since joining AMEC he has provided asphalt and construction materials consulting services to various federal, provincial and municipal agencies including NSTIR. Currently, Phil is AMEC’s Materials Engineering Operations Manager for Atlantic Canada which encompasses primarily asphalt QA/QC services on major projects in the region. Phil is also the current Vice Chair of the Nova Scotia Asphalt User/Producer Association.

Mark Downie is a Materials Engineer and Project Manager with Maritime Testing Limited. He started his career as a Materials Technician with Warnock Hersey in 1987, staying with them through their transition to Geocon Atlantic Limited. Mark transferred to parent company and general engineering firm, SNC-Lavalin, while returning to school to complete an Engineering degree. He obtained a degree in Civil Engineering from Dalhousie University in 2004, and joined the team at Maritime Testing in 2005. He is an active member in many industry associations, including membership on the board of the Nova Scotia Asphalt User Producer Association, and membership in good standing with the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia.

Mark Underhill is an Estimator with Dexter Construction in Bedford Nova Scotia. He joined Dexter in 2004 as Quality Control Supervisor of aggregate production for the mobile operation in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. In 2008 Mark moved into the position of Quality Control Superintendent for Dexter Construction’s mobile asphalt and aggregate division based out of Truro Nova Scotia before moving into his current role as Estimator for Dexter Constructions Highway Asphalt Division in 2011. Since 1998 Mark has gained laboratory &field quality control experience with such organizations as ACP Testing & Engineering (Alberta), Jacques Whitford & Associates, and Beton Brunswick Ltee. Mark is a member of the NSUPA Steering Committee, a member of CTAA, and is currently 2nd Vice Chair of CUPGA. Mark is also in the process of obtaining a Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of North Dakota.

Mike Deering
Mike graduated from NSCC Building Technology in 1985 & started working in the field of quality control with NS Department of Transportation in 1982, then from 1985 1987. He started working with Jacques Whitford in 1987 as an asphalt technician as their materials program was just beginning. Mike left Jacques Whitford after 14 years to start with Basin Contracting Limited in 2001 as Quality Manager. Mike is involved in all aspects of quality control for both Basin Contracting & Gallant Aggregates. Mike has been a member of CTAA since 1993, and is the past Chair of NSUPA.

Carl Ballie
Residing in Sydney, Carl is the Vice President of Municipal Ready Mix, a position he has held since 1994. Carl began his career with B.H. Fancey Construction in Halifax, and followed that up with working for Cumberland Paving for 7 years before his move to Municipal Ready Mix.
Carl was born in New Glasgow & has been married to his wife Barb for 23 years. He has 3 children, Leah, Evan, and Duncan, and enjoys being a hockey coach to his kids, tennis, and woodworking.

Keith Purdy earned his degree in Civil Engineering from Dalhousie University in 2001, followed by a Master of Engineering degree in 2008. In 1999, he started his career with Maritime Testing Limited as a student working as a field technician performing compaction, concrete and smoothness testing. He eventually moved up to the role as Project Manager responsible for asphalt quality control and mix designs, non-destructive testing contracts held with the province of Nova Scotia and was the Supervising Engineer for the CSA Concrete laboratory. In 2008, Keith moved from the private sector to the public sector by becoming the Pavement Engineer for the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (NSTIR) working with the Highway Construction Services group. He is responsible for the administration of the province’s Pavement Management System, chairing the Standard Specification Committee for Pavements (Division 4 of the Standard Specification) and supervising non-destructive testing contracts held by consultants. Keith is involved with several industry associations including the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC). He is a board member of the Nova Scotia Asphalt User-Producer Association as the NSTIR representative.

Peter Rosvall graduated from the New Brunswick Community College - Civil Engineering Technology in 1992.He worked with Public Works and Government Services Canada as a Project Manager, where he was responsible for the development & management of various capital projects at federal facilities throughout the province of New Brunswick.
In 1995 Peter started at Strescon Limited in Saint John where he was an inspector working both in fabrication and erection of precast/prestressed concrete products. In 1998 he moved to Nova Scotia to become the QualityControl Manager for Strescon's growing facility in Bedford. Peter joined the Faculty of the Nova Scotia Community College in 2007 and teaches in the Civil Engineering Technology Program. He received a diploma in Adult Education in 2009. His areas of specialty are concrete, asphalt and geomechanics and is responsible for the operation of the Material Testing Laboratory at the Waterfront Campus. Peter is a member of TechNova and is on the Board of Directors of the Atlantic Chapter of the American Concrete Institute.

Robert White started his career with Miller Paving Limited, after graduating from University College of Cape Breton in 1990, working for the company in both NB and Ontario. In 1994 he took a position offered by the Warren Group as District Estimator in Saint John, NB and then District Manager in Cornwall, ON. From 2000 to 2008 he worked for Cruickshank Construction Limited in Eastern Ontario, as General Manager of the Kingston Division and later as CAO. Robert returned home to Nova Scotia in 2008 and worked with AMEC as Field Supervisor. In 2011 he had the opportunity to rejoin The Miller Group as Construction Manager for Cumberland Paving and Contracting in Halifax. Robert has experience with several industry associations (Ontario Hot Mix Producers’ Association, Council of Ontario Construction Associations, Kingston Construction Association) and is a member in good standing with TechNova.

Adam Marlin has been employed with the Halifax Regional Municipality as a construction inspector since his graduation from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of civil engineering in 2005. Over the last six years, as part of the HRM Design and Construction team, Adam has been involved in the project management and inspection of a variety of capital works projects which range from small scale thin overlay paving projects to large scale new construction of roads and bridges. During this time Adam’s keen interest in asphalt has been cause for him to get involved in the first cold-in-place partial depth recycling projects HRM has undertaken, both with expanded asphalt (foam) and emulsion, as well as being instrumental in the Kingston Crescent project which became HRM’s first street paved with warm mix asphalt. Adam is currently a member with CTAA and NSUPA.

Guy Kendziora is a graduate of
Mabou
High School
on
Cape Breton Island
. Upon leaving the island, Guy attended Acadia University & St. Mary’s University, graduating in 1987. During his university years, Guy was employed (seasonally) with the NSTIR Materials Laboratory in Miller Lake working in the asphalt section, where duties included HMA mix designs, surface treatment (chip seal) designs, pre-construction road surveys, HMA field QC, on-site QC manager (NSTIR) mobile paving plant #1, plus various experience in the soils & concrete sections. During the spring of 1992 Guy joined McAsphalt Industries Ltd. and hasn’t looked back. Guy is now McAsphalt Industries’ Marketing Manager for Atlantic Canada. Guy’s industry involvement includes: NBUPG Steering Committee 2001 2010, NSRBA Board of Directors 2007 2009, CTAA (Local Co-Chair) LAC Halifax Convention 2003, CTAA Board of Directors 2002 2007, NSUPA Steering Committee 2007 Present. While on the NSRBA Board of Directors, Guy co-chaired three AGM charity auctions, raising a total of $110,000. |
